"History encased in sand" - since 1871
Monastery Fortress
The largest modern fortress in Central Europe - was built between 1850 and 1871. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the neoclassical military monument is a fascinating sight with its huge walls of precisely carved stones, its 3-4 metre thick earthworks covering the defences and its network of underground passages (kazamata) stretching for several kilometres. Its monumental dimensions are demonstrated by the following figures: the fortress covers 25 hectares, the total area including the firing ranges is 70 hectares, the floor area of the buildings is 25 680 m2 and the number of rooms 640.
Star Fortress
The Fortress of the Star - the predecessor of the Turkish St Peter's palisade - lies opposite the eastern bastion of the Old Castle. Its construction began in 1568, under the command of Miklós Pállfy. By the summer of 1586 the bridge piers, which could accommodate 100-100 horses, were completed. The role of the bridgehead forts was to protect the central fortress from surprise attacks, block river traffic, protect the existing or, if necessary, the new bridge and serve as a base for cavalry guns against the attackers. With the end of the Turkish fighting, the fortifications lost their main function and were abandoned.
Igmándi Fortress
The Igmándi fortress, the youngest and southernmost part of the Komárom fortress system, was started in 1871. The architects designed the layout of the fortress to have a wide front line, ensuring that as many guns as possible faced the enemy. A barracks enclosed the northern side of the enclosed fort. From the courtyard, access to the trunks and shoulder bags was via tunnels. According to the regulations, the fort was defended by one to four companies and 16 to 20 guns.
